LISA BOOSTANI × FUCKING YOUNG!

As the days get shorter and winter creeps towards us, we asked multidisciplinary creator Lisa Boostani to tell us a bit about her creative process for her latest editorial featured in FuckingYoung!'s latest issue, versing on the concept of EVOLUTION. 

For this editorial titled MUTATION, Lisa Boostani led a creative team into a whimsical natural space in order to explore a concept that no living being can aspire to escape. 

When asked about her main sources for inspiration:

I thought of the series around the concept of mutation by staging a young man’s transformation as he connects with nature. Between dream and reality, the story explores the different processes of mutation where magic dances and rituals celebrate union with nature and the power of the wild. Invoking the new freedom of his body, the dancer goes through multiple states, from meditation to trance and appears to merge into an animal form. The compositions play with varied textures and materials that stimulate the felt sense like expanded forms of life.

When asked about her main sources for inspiration:

My main source of inspiration is the body itself and being alive. How we express emotion through the body is a universal language. The way we constantly transform ourselves and intentionally connect ourselves to Nature. I’m also inspired by archetypes like the Fool or the Pelegrim which offer a transgressive narrative. The fantasy world of Tim Walker’s photography, the way David Cronenberg stages the absurd, the documentary work of James Barnor, Kristine Potter and Vanessa Winship, are also a source of inspiration.

When asked about unexpected gifts & challenges during the shoot:

I had a great team and I was happy with the propositions from Samba, the dancer. He understood what I wanted to do and we found a good creative dialogue. That was a very rewarding interaction. The location was inspiring yet I had some tricky moments where me and my assistant had to do some acrobatics to hold the camera.
